Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2016/17 school year at Veterans Memorial Middle School. I am honored to serve as your principal and I am looking forward to another year of celebrating our students’ success. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students and we believe that all students can learn. We have high expectations for student achievement and provide students with appropriate opportunities for success. To complement a strong academic curriculum, we also address the social and emotional needs of the adolescent student. Our many extra-curricular activities provide students the opportunity to participate and explore their diverse interests. Community values including caring, respect, responsibility and citizenship are imparted daily through the curriculum. Students are recognized and rewarded for exhibiting appropriate character traits.

Our English Language Arts program combines research based best practices to increase reading fluency and comprehension of complex text. Students read differentiated informational text based on their Lexile reading level from an online program which is based on articles from the Associated Press. Students read novels and other fictional works to foster a love of literature. In mathematics, our students utilize number sense and mathematical reasoning to solve real world problems. The Big Ideas math program offers a wonderful balance between inquiry-based and direct instruction. Our science program promotes hands on learning through authentic science experiences in our STEM classes and through experiments conducted in our state of the art science labs. Our social studies program integrates history, geography, economics, and civics while promoting patriotism and appreciation for the democratic process. Veterans Memorial Middle School’s academic program fosters critical thinking skills and encourages our students to become independent thinkers and problem solvers.

All of our classrooms at Veterans Memorial Middle School have interactive projectors, document cameras, and computers to equip students with 21st century technical skills. We also have computer labs, Promethean tables, and a 2:1 student to lap top ratio. Veterans Memorial Middle school students are afforded the opportunity to explore a variety of elective areas with an emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and music/math) courses. Course offerings include science technology, construction science, computer science, forensic science, consumer science, art, music, world language, and communication arts.
